From the Athletic Department

Highland Park Senior High's fall sports season has been in full swing since opening day on August 11th. Over 400 student athletes participated in various disciplines, we are proud to note their accomplishments both on the field and off. Many students have taken a rigorous course of study and mid-quarter grades have reflected their abilities as both athletes and scholars. Congratulations to all!

Tommy Butterfoss named Male Athlete of the Year
Butterfoss a varsity soccer, basketball, and track star was named Highland's Male Athlete of the Year, which is given to one outstanding senior athlete.

Cheerleading Tryouts
Girl's interested in cheerleading should come to tryouts that will be held on May 21, 22 and 23rd from 4-6pm in the Gym. Come Join the Team!

Congratulations to Girl’s Basketball Coach Deb Williams, who led the Lady Scots to an 8-4 conference mark this year and as a result was the St. Paul City Conference Coach of the Year!
 
Boy’s Swimming
The Trojans (The Highland/St. Paul Academy Co-op team) swam great this year leading to all-conference selections for many team members.

Boy’s Basketball
Charles Portis, the boy’s basketball coach won the 300th game of his coaching career this season. The long-time Highland coach, who led the team to a state title in 1998, recorded the milestone with a 73-54 victory over Harding High School. Portis is the 5th coach in St. Paul Conference history to achieve the feat!

Wrestling
Dan Merth and Max Kafka qualified for the State High School Wrestling Tournament held this week Way to go gentlemen! Congratulations and best of luck!

Other News
Congratulations to Judo aficionado Max Kafka. Kafka, an HP senior has recently returned from the Junior Pan-American games held earlier this spring in Agentina! Kafka placed 3rd, 5th, and 5th in the various Judo competitions at the games. Quite an achievement.

Highland Park Senior High students Scot Pearson and Andrew Yost were both honored as “Good Neighbors” from WCCO for their work with youth.

Cecilia Noecker has won the Region 4AA, Minnesota State High School League’s Triple-A Award for excellence in academics, athletics and the arts. There are 16 schools in our region that nominated these "best of the best" students. Cecilia will be recognized on television at the State Boy’s Basketball Tournament on March 29th. She was also selected as Highland Park's Athena Award Winner as our top female student-athlete of the year.
