This course introduces students to skills necessary for success in social studies classes.  Students will learn to distinguish between cause and effect, fact and opinion, and primary and secondary sources. Students will craft a research report, read graphs and maps, organize ideas, and ask critical questions.  Topics may include: pre-history, ancient civilizations, world religions, the Middle Ages, exploration/expansion, Renaissance, Reformation and revolutions.

World History IB Prep will involve studying patterns of human behavior across time within the historical context of global societies.  Students will discover commonalities/differences among peoples from past to present.  They will examine and evaluate evidence to understand the social, political, environmental, technological, economic and spiritual factors of human development.  Topics may include: pre-history, ancient civilizations, world religions, Middle Ages, exploration/expansion, Renaissance, Reformation and revolutions.

Prerequisite: None
Using the thematic approach, this course focuses on the regions of the world.  Students will apply geographic concepts such as population, agriculture, natural resource allocation, management industry, political geography, cultural geography, and urbanization to their lives.  Students will examine the impact of the physical environment on people/cultures.

H404101 11th Grade US History Grade 11 4 Quarters
Prerequisite: None
US History is designed to teach historical and con-temporary views of people, places, events, and dates from multiple perspectives.  Students will examine how these views have shaped the development of the US from its indigenous beginnings to its present status as a world influence.  Students will also study the many cultures that have and continue to contribute to this development.  Topics may include: three worlds collide, revolution, expansion/reform, Civil War/Reconstruction, industrialization, immigration, WWI, 1920s, the Great Depression, the New Deal, WWII, the Cold War, 1950s-70s Civil Rights and modern America.

Prerequisite: Prior IB Prep Social Studies course(s) recommended
History of the Americas is one of the regional options in the International Baccalaureate curriculum in the History Higher Level category.  This course is a comparative, in-depth study of the Western Hemisphere, centered on US and Latin American History.  Students will examine events chronologically from pre-colonial societies to modern day and from many different perspectives.  Topics may include: native civilizations in Mesoamerica, English and Spanish colonization, American Revolution and Independence, slavery in the US vs. Latin America, Imperialism and Reconstruction, the Mexican Revolution, the Great Depression, Post WWII US and Latin American events and policies.

12th Grade Courses


H475411 12th Grade History of Europe & the World IB Grade 12 4 Quarters
Prerequisite: Prior IB Prep & IB Social Studies course(s) recommended
2nd course of a 2-year sequence.  It will examine social, economic, political and scientific thought in Europe throughout the 1800s and its global manifestations during the 1900s.  This is a rigorous course calling for extra reading, writing and reflection.  Students are expected to stay on top of homework and be prepared to attend/contribute to class discussions.  Document analysis, research, historiography and writing will be stressed as students investigate history from diverse perspectives. Topics may include: consolidation of power in Europe, Imperialism and its impact, WWI, the Russian Revolution, the rise of single party states, WWII, international diplomacy of the Cold War, and the role of emerging nations.
 
U473201 Theory of Knowledge IB Grade 12 4 Quarters

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation, IB Honor or Diploma students only. 
TOK’s objective is to assess theories of how people acquire and use knowledge.  The course asks students to examine what can be known?  How can what is known be learned/organized?  Methods for organizing and systematizing knowledge in mathematics, science, literature, social studies and history are discovered/ compared.  Students will explore the role of knowledge in developing values and making value judgments. Non-IB 12th grade students must take Economic Systems and US Government 12.

Prerequisite: None
Economic Systems is a course designed to introduce students to how individuals, households, businesses and governments use scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants and needs.  Students will explore the four distinct areas of economic thought, which include fundamental economic problems, and micro-, macro- and international economics. Topics include: market systems, market pricing and business, labor, income distribution, unemployment, inflation, investment, monetary policy and international economies.

Prerequisite: None
This course is designed to teach about the dynamics of the political and social life of the United States.  Specific focus areas may include: Constitutional issues, legal issues, civil liberties, human rights, elections, court system, Congress and the Presidency.

H407301 Psychology/Social Problems Grade 12 2 Quarters

Prerequisite: None. 
This course is designed to prepare students for college psychology.  Students will be introduced to psychological facts, principles and phenomena associated with major subfields within psychology as well as the methods psychologists use in their science and practice. Topics include: introduction to psychology, learning, human development and psychopathology.  
 
H472101 World Geography IB Grades 11 – 12 4 Quarters
Prerequisite: 10th Grade World History IB Prep (H475101)
Students will examine the earth using six themes: World Population, Economic Development, and Urbanization in the Contemporary World, Energy Resources, World Food Supply, and Environmental Hazards. Various field studies will be used to study geography on a variety of scales, including local, state and regional. It is designed to satisfy both the State University requirements of one year of geography and to prepare the student to test at the IB Geography subsidiary level.

Prerequisite: None. 
Law & Justice is a survey course designed to allow students to concentrate on contemporary criminal justice issues at the federal, state and local level.  This course will emphasize the historical evolution of law enforcement, our court system, corrections, crime, juvenile justice, community policing and careers in law.  This course includes guest speakers from federal, state, and local law enforcement, lawyers, special agents and others in the criminal justice field.
