Construction Trades Pathway These courses are for students interested in careers in the trades. Opportunities will be available for students to earn apprenticeship hours. Future courses will include both trade and non-trade areas such as management, architecture and green building. T404521 Construction Trades 1 Grades 11 – 12 2 Quarters Prerequisite: Recommended Construction Tech 1, Beg or Adv Woodworking, Architectural Drafting 1 Construction Trades 1 is a hands-on course focusing on carpentry, welding, basic mechanical systems and careers in the industry. Through projects and labs following industry professional behavior standards, students will be able to identify and use basic carpentry tools, identify and use various welding equipment and processes, read and interpret blueprints and other technical documents, and apply basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. In addition, through a focus on the numerous careers in the construction industry, students will have the opportunity to talk with industry professionals during the classroom presentations and tours of construction sites. This course is a prerequisite to be considered for the UnderConstruction summer internship program. T404531 Construction Trades 2 Grades 11 – 12 2 Quarters Prerequisite: T404521 Construction Trades 1 Construction Trades 2 broadens the focus of the construction industry by engaging students in hands-on projects involving: plumbing, electrical, rough and finish carpentry, painting, floor covering, masonry, site work, blueprint reading, construction math, estimation, safety, sheet metal and HVAC, welding, inspection, English measurement, and roofing. Opportunities to gain and use these skills will be provided through trips to construction sites and union facilities. A unique aspect of this class is that students will build on professional standards of behavior such as: writing a construction resume, how to apply and interview for a construction job and receive OSHA 10 hour certification through SkillsUSA. It is highly recommended that students that are very interested in construction as a career take this course. Students involved in the UnderConstruction summer internship program are required to take this course. Medical Health Sciences Pathway These courses are for students interested in the healthcare field. Students will be prepared to earn their registered Nursing Assistant certification. C401511 Medical Careers/Nursing Assistant Grades 11 – 12 2 Quarters Prerequisite: None Nursing Assistants and Home Health Aides provide direct client care under the direction of a nurse or doctor in a variety of health care settings. Using technical skills learned in both the classroom and clinical setting, nursing assistants and home health aides perform such tasks as feeding, bathing, positioning, ambulating and comfort measures for the client. Students explore and discuss legal, ethical, and safety issues in client care. Students are prepared to take the Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide test to be placed on the Minnesota State Nursing Assistant Registry. This course will provide students with an opportunity to evaluate career choices through informed decision-making. Students will receive first-hand information from professionals in the medical and health-related fields. This exploration will be supported through a variety of activities including: library and internet research, career assessment instruments, informal interviews and/or volunteer opportunities. C401521 Medical Terminology Grades 11 – 12 1 Quarter Prerequisite: None In this course students will learn to recognize and build medical terms after learning the meaning of word parts. A computer lab may be used to review terminology and provide practice in word building. G408021 Human Body Systems Grades 11 – 12 1 Quarter Prerequisite: C401521 Medical Terminology In this course students will acquire a basic knowledge of body structure and function. Emphasis is on the healthy body. The content of this course prepares the student to understand common diseases and disorders along with current health issues.
Project Lead the Way – Pre-Engineering Pathway These courses will prepare students for advanced coursework at the college level in engineering. Students will design and build projects based on engineering principles using the Project Lead the Way national curriculum. T401481 Introduction to Engineering (IED) Grades 11 – 12 2 Quarters Prerequisite: M404111 Geometry or concurrent enrollment in Geometry This course emphasizes the development of a design. Students use computer software to produce, analyze, and evaluate models of project solutions. Students study the design concepts of form and function, and then use state-of-the-art technology to translate conceptual design into reproducible products. This course teaches students to: understand and apply the design process to solve various problems in a team setting; apply adaptive design concepts in developing sketches, features, parts and assemblies; interpret their own sketches in using computer software to design models; understand mass property calculations such as volume, density, mass, surface area, moment of inertia, product of inertia, radii of gyration, principal axes and principal movements, and how they are used to evaluate a parametric model; understand cost analysis, quality control, staffing needs, packing and product marketing; explore career opportunities in design engineering and understand what skills and education these jobs require; and develop portfolios to display their designs and present them properly to peers, instructors and professionals. T401482 Principles of Engineering (POE) Grades 11 – 12 2 Quarters Prerequisite: T401481 Introduction to Engineering Design Principles of Engineering is a broad-based survey course designed to help students understand the field of engineering and engineering technology and its career possibilities.
