Greetings,
fellow student or parent. This is the site for the Academic Bowl team
of Highland Park Senior High. The members of
the team are deaf or hard of hearing students.
The team: Highland
Park Senior High participated in Academic Bowl twice from 2005 to 2006.
The first year we joined, we went to Ohio to compete with other
regional schools. There are always different people on the team
because ever y year some seniors leave, and new freshmen are added..
Our second year, the team traveled to Michigan and placed 8th
place out of 16 with three wins and four losses.
2007
was supposed to be the third year for Highland Park's
team, but due to two students transferring to MSAD
(Minnesota State Academy of the Deaf). We came up short in players and
had to drop out of the competition. However, we are already
planning for 2008 academic bowl that will be hosted in
Indiana!
To prepare for the Academic
Bowl matches, practices are held every Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday. During practices, we simulate a real match,
using powerpoints for the questions/answers. (Thanks to
Assistant coach, Dan Hubin for creating the powerpoints we use for
practice. )
To help fund our
trips we get money from students who volunteer to help work at
the Metrodome during the Vikings, Gophers Football and Twins
seasons. Also, we do some fundraising stuff like selling
christmas things =].
Basic Rules of Academic Bowl:
- The maximum number of players on a team is 5 players, the minimum is 3 players.
- Four players are played in the "match table" for each
match, while the fifth player is benched until a substitute is
allowed.
- There are three rounds played during each match.
- The first round, there are 10 questions. The categories
can vary anywhere from Math to Pop culture. Whoever is
the first to buzz in with the correct answer scores for their
team.
- In the second round, there are 16 questions. In this round teammates take turns answering the questions.
- In the third round, there are 10 questions. This time,
teammates can discuss over answers and put answers on a paper
together. There is a 3 minute time limit for the team to
respond to the questions. After both responses are in, they say
who got the points.
- For each tournament there are 7 regular matches. After
scores are tallied up, the best four teams are put in a play-offs where
they compete for the first and second places.
- Whoever wins the first and second place for their regional
Academic Bowl touranment will receive a full expenses
paid trip to Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. to compete
for the national championship.
