The 2008-2009 school year will mark my ninth year of teaching high school English. Prior to teaching at Highland, I spent three years teaching in Hollister, California. Although I enjoyed my experiences in California, I am happy to be back in Minnesota. I earned a B.A. in English from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and a Master's of Education from St. Kate's. In addition to teaching English, I am also Highland's yearbook advisor. Meetings are held on Fridays during Advisory in room 224. Pride and Prejudice Journal Assignment

Directions: Respond to both journal topics. Responses must use precise textual evidence/quotes to support your answers. Responses without quote support will not receive points. Use MLA formatting for your quotes. For example, “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife” (Austen 1). All responses should be typed, and each response should be 1-2 pages in length. Please remember to double space and to use 12-point Times New Roman font. Journal Topics

1. Pride and prejudice are central concepts in the novel, but their definitions are not simple. Different kinds of pride appear throughout the novel. Based on your reading of the novel, how do you think Austen would define pride? What would be her definition of prejudice? Which character(s) represent each of these concepts? Use specific details from the novel to support your answer.

2. Examine the following married couples: Mr. and Mrs. Bennet; Mr and Mrs. Gardiner; Mr. and Mrs. Collins; Mr. and Mrs. Bingley; and Mr. and Mrs. Darcy. What seems to be Austen’s conclusions about marriage partners? Are men, as well as women, limited in choices of a marriage partners? What would be the ideal marriage?


English 11 IB
English 11 IB is a demanding honors course meeting international
standards. Students should be highly motivated, college-bound juniors
who are prepared to commit to a course of study which requires
independent reading coupled with detailed critical response journals,
critical thinking, and written literary commentaries. There is a strong
emphasis placed on class discussion. There will be a required
comparative analysis and a required oral presentation. This is one of
the two courses that will prepare students for the Higher Level IB exam
in May of their senior year.

English 9 IB Prep
Activities in this course are designed to prepare students for the skills they will be expected to master in the upper level IB English courses. The short story and the novel will be the focus of the first semester, and poetry and drama will be the focus of the second semester. Students will be expected to read (outside of class) selected short stories and novels. Second semester drama will include a minimum of one Shakespearean play. Poetry will include an epic poem, ballads, and contemporary poetry. A grammar review will be given to arm the students for their foreign languages and to build a base from which writing can be discussed. Writing will be stressed the entire year, beginning with reader response journals and building to a critical analysis essay. Students will also do a variety of oral presentations and speeches throughout the year. Evaluations will be both written and oral, depending on the subject matter being tested.
