Our mission is to serve all Highland Park Students, to work with the community arts organizations and to engage students in creative & technical learning. Our Outdoor Learning Center & Garden space was developed with Farm in The City to encourage art activities along with project and study space for our students and community.

Our students have been successful in their classes and have received  honors and  special recognition.  Their work has  debuted at the Honors Exhibit at the Minnesota Museum of Art, photos have been shown on Jones Soda Pop labels, and films shown at the Walker Art Center.

"Graphic Women" I live in St. Paul, Minnesota and attend High School. Here I work for an hour and a half every day to create my portfolio. My materials consist of oil pastels, bamboo brushes, charcoal, and pencil. My final tool is the computer and Photoshop where my most radiant color comes in. My body of work starts off by paying homage to Annie Leibovitz, who focus some of her photographs on women, and takes many photos of famous people. I am drawing the outline of images of women in magazines (usually ones that are more graphic) on large pieces of paper. I draw women from the most elegant to the most outrageous. From these images I transfer them onto the computer and Photoshop them to add more color and character.

Girl's in The Director's Chair

Documentary Film by Kaya Allen, Hannah Silver, Moriah Petty, to be shown at The Walker Art Center/ Girls in the Director’s Chair Film Festival

Three Highland Students, Kara Allen, Hannah Silver, and Moriah Petty created a film documentary in Ms. Canelake’s  Media Arts Filmmaking Class.  Their film, which is about the Heart of the Beast Puppet Theater’s May Day parade, is a charming look at  how communities come together to celebrate.  They produced & edited their film here at Highland Park, using digital film cameras, computers, & computer software to produce and edit their film. Their film assignment was to document and tell a story about something that will intrigue and interest an audience.

The Walker Art Center invites young women (ages 18 and under) who live in Minnesota to submit their films or videos to be considered for screening in the March 2008 Girls in the Director’s Chair film festival, presented in conjunction with the Walker’s annual Women with Vision international film festival. This program reflects the ideas and points of view of young women. Participants are invited to submit a film, video, or animation on their own or as part of a school, group, or community project.  Go to walkerartcenter.org to find more information for this March 1st  film-viewing event.

Hall of Fame / Art Students That Excel
Ashley Fleck wins coveted Jones Soda Photography Label Award

Ashley Fleck , a 10th grade student at Highland Park Senior High School in St. Paul, Minnesota is a photography student who hopes to attend The Perpich Center for the Arts next year.

She was awarded the coveted photo label award from Jones Soda Company; a creative Seattle based pop company. They receive thousands of entries for photos for their pop labels and Ashley Flecks photo stood out as a unique creative choice. Her black and white photograph depicts a crumpled note, which says, "I love you" on it. Ashley says the photograph suggests a story and mixed emotions.
Patricia Canelake, Highland Park photography instructor says, "Her photograph is very appealing and I understand why she was in the top 1% of thousands of photos submitted. Ashley Fleck has great ideas and she does excellent work both in the darkroom and with digital imaging."

Her winning pop bottle will be on store shelves soon, and the soda bottles will be distributed nationally. The award acknowledges the conceptual, creative, and technical skills of the person behind the camera. More information and photographic images can be viewed on the Jones Soda web site, www.jonessoda.com Congratulations, Ashley Fleck on this great award!
