Students are assigned to counselors by last name:

    • Ms. Kurtz: A - He
    • Ms. Rambow: Hi - Q
    • Mr. Kramer: R - Z

How do I make an appointment to see my counselor?
Counselors will see students throughout the school day.  Ycan stop by the Guidance Office before/after school or during your lunch to schedule an appointment with Traci, the Guidance Secretary.

    Can I change my schedule?
Students are encouraged to plan their programs carefully.  Schedule changes after the initial registration may be made only for the following reasons -

    • The student has failed a course, which would affect the schedule sequence.
    • The student needs a course to meet graduation requirements.
    • The student had placement/scheduling errors.

Students may drop a course during the first few days of the term if space is available in an alternative course.  Students may have to remain in a class for the duration of the trimester if no alternatives are available.  Parent/guardian approval is required for some schedule changes.

Am I on track to graduate?
Counselors will visit advisories every year to update students on their graduation progress and hand out transcripts.  If you do now know your status, please make an appointment immediately to see your counselor!

How do I request an official transcript?
If you are a current student, you can fill out a request for an official transcript in the Guidance Office.

    What are my graduation requirements?
These are the specific course requirements for graduation in St. Paul public schools:

    English: 4 years

    Social Studies: 3 1/2 years

Mathematics: 3 years of math, students must complete math studies through Algebra 2/Trigonometry

Science: 3 years, one year of Biology is required

Fine Arts: 1 year, visual and performing arts classes can be used to complete this requirement

    Physical Education: 1/2 year

    Health: 1/2 year

    FACS/Tech: (Family & Consumer Science/Technology) 1/2 year

Electives: in addition to the above course requirements, students must complete a total number of credtis that is determined by their graduation year.  The different totals reflects changes made to the HP schedule (four period day to six period day, trimesters to quarters)

      • Class of 2008: 58
      • Class of 2009: 66
      • Class of 2010: 73
      • Class of 2011: 80
      • Class of 2012 and beyond: 86

Additional Considerations: world language study is not required for graduation, however, most 4-year colleges and universities require applicants to complete two years of study of a single world language during high school.

How will the change to quarters in the 2008-2009 school year affect me?
In an effort to align the schedules of all St. Paul secondary programs, Highland Park will be moving from trimesters to quarters in the 2008-2009 school year.  Our school will still run on a six period day.

For year-long classes the change is minor.  Instead of being given final grades three times a year, students will receive final grades and credits four times a year.  Quarters will be around nine weeks in length.

Other classes will be offered in varying lengths: one, two or four quarters long.
